I had excellent success with fop-0.20.5 following the instructions in 
this HOWTO, as long as JAVA_HOME is properly defined it's very easy with 
the fop.sh convenience script:

I have used Sun's Java Advanced Imaging (JAI) library instead of Jimi as 
described in that document.

I've had some problems getting fop-0.91beta to work, but so far 
fop-0.20.5 does everything that I have needed, so I haven't pursued 
further getting the beta version to work.
