Having read all your reactions I also want to give my opinion on this. I 
agree with Stephen that there is a difference between applications (any 
program on our desktop/laptop) and apps (small programs written for 
smartphones and tablets). It is a pity that people start using these 
words interchangeably, it impoverishes a language.
Since the Ubuntu documentation is written for desktop users, I 
personally would prefer to only use the word "application". But if the 
team think it is ok to use both words interchangeably, I will not insist.
