A mi tampoco me funcionaba, pero lo  probe de este modo 
cdrecord -scanbus dev=/dev/hdd

y me dio una salida mas decente como esta:

Ahora eso si, sigo sin poder grabar desde consola, no se xq, cuando
puedo grabar desde el nautilus.
