No arranca ubuntu (udev)

Apago dos días el ordenador, y a la vuelta resulta que no me arranca, mejor 
dicho, arranca pero me sale un mensaje de error y solo el prompt del root.

Nada más arrancar me sale el siguiente error:

"Creating initial device nodes
/etc/rcS.d/S04udev: line 134: 1552 Segmentation fault udevstart
* Cannot find initrd device!
null symbol found"

he intentado mirar el archivo con vi, pero no veo nada raro en esa linea (de 
lo poco que puedo entender). Después de las lineas anteriores me añade esto:

"The device node /dev/hda2 for the filesystem is missing, incorrect, or 
there is no entry for the root filesystem listed in /etc/fstab"

Lo cual es absolutamente falso, el fstab tiene su entrada para hda2 que es 
/. Así que no de de dónde se ha sacado eso. Luego sigue así:

"The system is also unable to create a temp node in /dev/shm to use as a 
work-around"

Pues muy bien. Sigue con...

"This means you have to fix this manually. CONTRO-D will exit from this 
shell and reboot"

Por supuesto!!, que habrá que arreglarlo manualmente, y CONTROL-D no hace 
otra cosa que volver al mismo sitio.

Se me ocurre que podría intentar borrar el S04udev pero me no sé si 
funcionará y además me parece una chapuza. Antes de irme de vacaciones 
estuve trasteando con una pda, y hotplug, pero no creía que eso pudiera ser 
pecado...

Por favor, cualquier tipo de ayuda... (aunque sea un hombro sobre el que 
llorar...)
