Problemas con la aceleración 3D en Xubuntu 6.06 con tarjeta S3 Savage 4

Hola,

Instalé hace poco Xubuntu 6.06 en una PIII 800 con una tarjeta
gráficaDiamond A90( S3 Savage 4).
Tengo el siguiente problema, tanto como desde el CD( prooé varios tanto de
Xubuntu como de Ubuntu, todos de la versión 6.06) como del disco rígido, a
los pocos segundo de empezar la aceleración 3D se congela la imagen, el
cursor deja unas manchas y queda todo parado. En xorg.conf aparece todo bien
configurado. Hice
$ glxinfo |head

por lo que la aceleración esta activada.
Cuando probé con CD de Ubuntu viejos( 5.04) y Knoppix 4.0, la tarjeta S3
Savage 4 fue reconocida como tal, hice glaxgears y todo andubo de lo mas
bien. Por lo que veo que hay algo mál en 6.06 en general con respecto a esta
tarjeta gráfica.
Por las dudas, bajé los controladores desde
http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/ pero al tratar de instalara me
apareció que no encuentra los módulos del núcleo( kernel). L Salida completa
esta al pie del mensaje.
La verdad, no tengo muchas esperanzas con este controlador porque salio dos
meses antes que Ubuntu 6.06 por lo que debe ya haber sido inclúido en él.
Traté otros métodos como actualizar el sístema o el clásico sudo
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg poniendo los 16MB que soporta mi tarjeta, pero
sin reslutados.

La computadora es para un familiar que vive lejos y la tengo que tener lista
para mañana, por lo que me es bastante urgente.
