Error al hacer actualizaciones.

Buenas,

Soy una usuaria de Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - Lucid Lynx, pero mis conocimientos
técnicos son muy limitados, por no decir inexistentes. Hasta ahora mi
sistema operativo ha funcionado sin ningún problema pero, por desgracia, al
intentar descargar las últimas actualizaciones he recibido el siguiente
mensaje:

   *Could not initialise the package information*
An unresolvable problem occurred while initialising the package information.
Please report this bug for the "update manager" package and try to include
the following error message:
"W: Encountered status field in a non-version description, E: Encountered a
section with no Package: header, E: Problem with
MergeList/var/lib/dpkg/status E: The package lists or status file could not
be parsed or opened".

El problema es que no sé cómo mandar automáticamente un informe de este
tipo.

También me ha salido un simbolito de prohibición (círculo rojo con línea
horizontal blanca) en la barra de herramientas y, al situarme en él con el
ratón me sale un mensaje parecido:

   ** An error occurred, please run the Package Manager from the right
click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error mesage
was: "Error: Opening the cache (W:Encountered a section with no Package:
header, E: Problem with MergeList/var/lib/dpkg/status, E: The package lists
or status file could not be parsed or opened". This usually means that your
installed packages have unmet dependencies.

Pero cuando intento iniciar el "Package Manager" como me dice, me sale otro
mensaje de error en esa ventana:

   *An error occurred*

The following details are provided:

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

W: Encountered status field in a non-version description

Y la única opción que me es posible usar es la de cerrar el mensaje, que
cierra a su vez toda la ventana.

¿Sabría alguien ayudarme, por favor?
