Hola.
Tiene pinta de ser algún problema en el registro de paquetes instalados. 
En el log del error se ve que se menciona el archivo 
/var/lib/dpkg/status ; este archivo lleva registro del estado de los 
paquetes instalados por dpkg (En el fondo dpkg hace el trabajo, apt es 
sólo un front-end), si hay errores en este archivo seguramente se 
bloqueará la instalación de nuevos paquetes.

Lo que decía anteriormente un compañero de lista es verdad, una memoria 
que funciona mal puede haber dañado los datos que se guardan en el disco 
duro.

A ver, si no solucionas el problema con las sugerencias anteriores con 
relación a cambiar el origen de los paquetes, busca problemas según lo 
mencionado anteriormente. Hay un documento muy bueno en la wiki de Mepis 
que muestra lo que puedes hacer en caso de reparar errores en el 
registro de apt.
