I suggest getting a fit. Go to your  LBS and at least talk to  the guy/girl who would  do a  fit, tell  them about his injuries and see what they say.

One  of the  fit guys at my shop is trained in muscle and bone structure  with some kind of college degree, along with  specialized  fit school, and  he  works  with injured riders getting them back on  two wheels.

Something to consider before buying a new bike.
