It's a shame you lost your data. I recently convinced a friend with
Windows 8 on a Lenovo Think Pad to switch to Ubuntu, and the same thing
happened to him. The only sure-fire way to avoid the problem is to have
good backups.
This bug is an embarrassing one, though, because it can hurt confidence
in the OS itself.
