UBUNTU 12.04 - the system is running in low graphics mode

I tried searching on the internet but had no effect to the instructions.
a) how can I fix it;

I have internet but for some reason not connected.
b) how can I connect to the Internet without a GUI (network diagnosis and
activate the network card) so I need to install it;

c) Alternatively, how can I repair the installation without losing my files;

Perhaps the best-quickest solution to connect the system with a livecd to
get backup of my files and do a clean install from scratch;
