A. Makes it easier if you separate the two questions / queries if they
are totally unrelated

B. Formatting USB pen drive
First Why - is there a problem with you pen drive

Second what are you formatting for ??

In Ubuntu if you like the GUI stuff then you could check out disk-admin
where your plugged in there is a format option there - make sure you
choose the right file system (can never remember if pendrives are fat32
or fat16 )
