Alok,

A ethernet interface does not disapper (in normal circumstances)
if ethernet cable is inserted. I have however seen this happening
once in a peculiar case which also got resolved once the kernel was
changed.

Now, for your problem, remove the ethernet cable to your desktop
and then try to find if there is ethernet eth0 present (using ifconfig
eth0). If it is not there, then you are missing some of the drivers
which u can proceed using lspci and finding the appropriate driver

If the ethernet interface comes back alive then connect the cable to
the interface and then check if the interface disappears. Also you can
check the status of the interface using command "mii-tool" which will
say if the carrier in the interface(link) is present or not. If the
interface commands report that the interface is not present but again
after un-plugging, you get back the interface (as in step 1) then you
must be having some sort of the same card which i had problems with. I
guess it was with a broadcomm card. Try to (by some other means)
download the 2.6.16 kernel (not the latest ones since they have some
tcp_window_scaling issues i guess) and compile and check if you can
bring up the interface.

Feel free to mail us in case you need any other help.

PS: If you are in chennai then unicast me so that i can help u out.

The box said "Requires Windows 95, NT, or better", so I installed Linux.
