i think you should better buy a Lan card it just costs 180 bucks no there is no hassle & disconnections as in case in USB.
As Usb( networking devices ) support in linux is still under development stage so if by any means its possible then you will need lot of effort to configure device which your parents might feel uneasy with.

Also i strongly feel they should upgrade the ubuntu version to at least Drapper(6.06) which offers long term support. i didn't get what u meant by
"My parents old comp only supports and runs
5.10.."
linux is a versitile os then can run on very computer configration and on every platform, if it has less RAM(most likely case with old PC) then You can use Xfce which is lighter than Gnome, also Gnone can also be configured to run on low resources.

hi,
My parents old comp has no ethernet card, and with windows used a special driver for the broadband connection that
made use of usb as a networking device. The adsl router was provided by bsnl, quidway WA1003A,..

Ubuntu does detect the adsl modem, partially, ie loads the eagle-usb drivers automatically..
Has anyone successfully made use of the modem in such a case?, please do help me if so.

My parents old comp only supports and runs
5.10..
I can also provide the detailed lsusb details if needed.
