interesting debate

nothing against forums really - they are useful - esp when in trouble and
google more often than not directs tech / software related discussions to
some forum discussion.

That said the distinct advantage of mailing lists is information is
delivered to ones doorstep (literally like a daily news paper) one chooses
then whether to read the whole or sections and to flag relevant topics to
follow up.

Am part of a few forums - ubuntu, mozilla forum, linux for you, digit and
some more but i rarely go there - why because on my bandwidht (and
connection consistency) i just want my mails downloaded and thats it - and
then i can read at my leisure. Forums don't ( i think offer that peace of
mind ) one has to be on line and monitoring key areas. Sure not being on a
forum may result in not gaining valuable insights but thats the cost i pay
to have th flexibility to participate at my time and pace.

So ideally if forums can deliver to the doorstep - why not BUT the massive
content that is generated on various forums seems to preclude that - not to
mention the horrendous amount of traffic on the net.

Personally i will stick to mailing lists but am not averse to visiting and
subcribing to relevant forums (though in the latter my participation is very
nearly zilch)
