Yes, I'm a Kubuntu user. :) (Kubuntu 6.06.2 LTS)

I had installed GNOME, un-installed it a month ago. Installing KDE over
Ubuntu or GNOME over one can refer to the following pages:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingKDE

There are tutorials over the web for installing GNOME-desktop on
Kubuntu. The packages for different desktop environments are (apt-cache
search ubuntu-desktop)

You question is a bit ambiguous. What is "open space" here? The space
between the folder view in Konqueror? The empty space on the desktop?
I'm not sure what the question is and I haven't used GNOME extensively
to be close enough to guess what it is. (May be I didn't understand
your question).

However, assuming, right clicks, you'll have the standard options for a
file along with opening it with a application of your choice.

Sabayon is really a coo! distro. But I guess, Kubuntu's simplicity is
good enough too.
