Ubuntu is for Human Beings and Human Beings prefer simpler installation
procedure. Some one starting on using Linux has no idea what GNOME or
KDE is, and he is more bother whether his hardware works and he is able
to continue doing the jobs he have been doing with his computer. So
giving unknown choices to the fresh user confuses him. Thus, GNOME was
selected as the Desktop Environment, and the KDE equivalent called
Kubuntu was born later as many KDE users wanted to enjoy the benefits of
Ubuntu.Giving less options to people who are just having their first
encounter in Linux is more important, as a seasoned user who wants both
GNOME and KDE knows how to get them installed and working.
Secondly, Ubuntu was targeting a single installer CD which the user can
also try before installing it. Thus, most basically used things got
included into the single CD and we could accommodate only one Desktop
Environment into such a system. Other distros which give options of DE
are not single CD installers. AFAIR, Fedora had 3 disks during FC2/3
days itself. Ubuntu was trying to do a different thing from what others
were doing, and this is one reason that Ubuntu brought a change in
GNU/Linux desktop arena, when others were struggling to make their
presence felt.
