I have used audacity to record from cassette tape to computer by
connecting my walkman's output to line-in of the PC. audacity is
available in universe repository.
You can select what format to save the audio to in audacity
preferences. Since you want to burn them later I suggest either use
WAV format (when too much space is available) or FLAC format (in case
of space constraint). If you are using Ubuntu 8.04 or above then you
can use brasero to create audio CD. You can even use rhythmbox to
create audio CD when you import these songs in library. Both
applications can be accessed in the menu Applications -> Sound &
Video.
If you are using older release of Ubuntu, use serpentine to create
audio CD. This application can be accessed in the menu Applications ->
Sound & Video.
You may want to try jokosher for recording the songs from tape to PC.
But last time I tried it (version 0.9), it never worked for me. In
case you are using Ubuntu 8.10, jokosher 0.10 is available in universe
repositories.
Hope this helps.
