[ubuntu-in] Missing tools in Ubuntu 8.10

Hi

was trying to use hal - the gui device manager or something it was
called, which used to be in system -> administration in Ubuntu (atleast
till 7.10) now i cannot find it.

The CLI hald does not show the same details

any idea where this tool has disappeared and how would i be able to
access this information again.

Second
wanted to run this command
cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

to get detailed information on the USB devices , now this file i.e.
devices does not seem to exist , as it did in earlier versions of
Ubuntu. So any idea how to get this information

(/proc/bus/pci/devices exist though)
