If you wish to compile your own kernel, i suggest first installing the
'linux-source' metapackage with apt-get and then compiling the kernel
from that source, instead of the vanilla kernel from kernel.org. The
source will be in /usr/src/. Every distro patches the kernels from
kernel.org to suit their distro. So, these kernels will give you
better compatibility. And yeah, the earlier instructions of
restarting and editing /boot/grub/menu.lst will be necessary.
With this, the latest kernel that you will get in the Ubuntu (hardy)
repos is 2.6.24.19
