It is absolutely possible to install/run 32 bit Ubuntu on a 64 bit system.
Whatever graphics issues you have are 99% likely caused by something else
(likely the graphics driver, bad memory, bad USB stick). Try Safe Video
Mode or whatever it is called now, when booting.
64-bit vs 32-bit has been discussed a lot. If you are not memory limited
(>1 GB), do CPU intensive or large memory tasks, and don't use proprietary
applications, 64 bit is for you. 64-bit is also the future!
