[ubuntu-in] GUI on ubuntu server

Hello,

I have some experience in unix platform. Recently I have received ubuntu 
server cd. When I installed it I realized that it is without GUI. I do 
not have LAN card on the desktop so I want to use USB port for cable 
connection from Hathway Internet. My system is setup for dual boot 
windows xp and ubuntu server. I want GUI to be installed on server. I 
have installed ubuntu-desktop using aptitude from server ubuntu server 
cd. but I do not see any gnome installed on the server. there is no gdm 
to start.
How do I configure ubuntu to connect hathway internet thru usb port so 
that I can modify source list and install gui online? The modem is DPC 
2100R2.
Is there any installable meta package for GUI which I can download using 
Windows XP and install it on ubuntu server (off line)?
Please help.
