I think most of the media file format needed codecs are available in ubuntu
repository.

Can you share more information like what is the file extension (like .avi
.rmvb etc) and on which player did u play.
One thing i notice is rmvb format video is not supported in Movie player and
vlc in ubuntu 8.10 and bases systems.
One suggestion --> Avoid installing applications or codes from external
source, as i faced lot of problems when i was new to linux.
