procedure in the article is,
Gmail => fetchmail => procmail => { local file } => thunderbird
this is how you could possibly modify the setup,
Gmail => fetchmail => procmail => { local file (remote) } => rsync = >{
usb disk } => {local file (home)} thunderbird (saves in .thunderbird)
