[ubuntu-in] 9.10 overwrote grub of 8.10 - and did not place it in the revised grub - how to recover

Why are you going for so complicated solutions? All you need to do is
add correct entries to /boot/grub/grub.cfg. In grub2 this is dealt a
bit differently. Check the files in /etc/grub.d directory. Modify the
files as appropriate and then run update-grub.
