Are such scripts really necessary these days? Many things are highly
automated these days ex. codecs or flash installation.

Also check how many unnecessary changes this script implements.
* add extra repositories (Medibuntu, Getdeb, etc)
Why is this necessary. For last few releases only thing needed from
medibuntu repository is libdvdcss2 for DVD playback. Everything else
works with codec packages from official repository.

* download and install the latest updates
Why do you need a script to do that? You are prompted for updates
installation as and when they are available

* install codecs, web browser plugins (Java, Flash), additional
support for archives (RAR, 7-Zip) and additional fonts; installs the
latest Flash Player for Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 64bit from Adobe's
website
Except installing 64bit flash version everything else can be achieved
through the package managers. Codec installation is prompted by the
default media players. Flash/Java installation is prompted by
browsers.

* Gconf tweaks: move the Metacity window buttons back to the right,
disable the GDM login sound, fix the update manager behavior to always
show updates and enable the icons in menus and buttons
These are some useful changes. But not everybody may agree with it.

* install GIMP (which has been removed from Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid)
It is disputable how useful it is for casual user. May be unnecessary
in most cases. If needed can be installed from package managers.

* install VLC/install MPlayer
Why are these two players needed after installing gstreamer codecs?

* install Thunderbird email client
That is a good change. But again a casual user does not even know what
an email client is. (S)He just knows how to use Gmail/Yahoo etc.

* uninstall Empathy and replaces it with Pidgin
I am not using Empathy version from lucid. So really can't comment
which one is better now. In any case I don't think the script should
remove Empathy.

Just my thoughts.
