[ubuntu-in] Unable to configure Virtual BOX in Ubuntu 9.10

hello Mallikarjun and Ritesh Sinha, thank you very much for your suggestion......i will do that today...will it take some hard disk partition on my machine???? i mean to say that if i install xp by virtual machine , will it take some hard disk space????actually i have only 160 GB hard disk..

^^^ I don't think Virtualbox does that (detect the XP installed on the physical machine). You have the option of creating a new instance of a virtual machine or using an existing VDI file. 



Even I dont think it is possible as there is no direct connection of the guest with the hardware(Harddisk) 



 


Now i click on next.I have 2 GB RAM on my machine.For base memory i gave 512MB size.Then i click to next.then i came to hard disk.i clicke don existing hard disk which was something like ubuntu.vdi(i forgot the exact name).After that i click on next.Now summery comes and i clicked on finish.




    it was showing in virtual box OSE that "XP on Ubuntu is powered off".so i click on start.A new black window open(its probably
 boot window).it was showing some information like "You have the Auto capture keyboard option turned on. "i clicked on ok without doing anything.Now it shows that press F12 to select boot device.At this time also i have done anything.after that this message is shown to me



 "FATAL: NO bootable medium found! System halted."

This is because you did not install any operating system on the virtual disk.



What you can do is...

1) If you have iso image of bootable XP cd then it is fine or Insert XP CD 
2) Right click on "XP on Ubuntu powered off " select settings, click CD/DVD-Rom and click on the options you would like to.


3) now boot up and install the XP as you would do normally but it happens very fast (I donno the reason)

Once installation is done, unmount the CD/DVD mounted and you can start "XP on Ubutnu"



I know this explaination is very less for amature level, if you have any question please post back.

 




 
     so i want to know that how can i overcome with this problem.Actually i don't know how to configure the virtual box?


You can either migrate your existing XP installation to a VDI file (virtualbox image) but as far as I know it is a convoluted process involving intermediate tools like qemu. You can install XP on a new virtual machine. Instructions to do so can be had here [1]. It is for an older version of Ubuntu but the gist of it remains the same.
