I recently installed SCIM to type in Hindi Unicode.
Type in terminal:

*sudo apt-get install scim-m17n*
This should install all the files and dependencies required.

And then

 Code:

cd /etc/X11/Xsession.d
sudo gedit 75custom-scim_init

A file will be opened.
In that file, Paste these lines and save it :

 Code:

export XMODIFIERS="@im=SCIM"

export GTK_IM_MODULE="scim"

export XIM_PROGRAM="scim -d"

Logout and in. Then an icon should appear in the panel, click on it and
choose language .

In SCIM Setup --> IM Engine (Global Setup) --> Select Appropriate Hindi
Layout for typing.
