[ubuntu-in] installing ubuntu

I have compaq presario model SR5060IL desktop , which is upgraded to 1gb RAM.

Whenever i installed linux on it ,

 when  booting with linux ,the computer just hangs after some time runing smoothly (pointer does not move on the screen).

 I also tried different linux versions eg. ubuntu 9.10 , linux mint helena & currently ubuntu 10.04 LTS by the disc received from canonical.com

 I even not able to dual boot the machine, the problem was same.

 but when i tried installing linux via VIRTUAL BOX its done, but there is no sound...

 So' can anybody help what to do? Is this machine is capatible to run with ubuntu linux ?
or the mice or key board are compatible. please suggest

configuration of machine is

 intelcore 2duo E4300 processor(2MB L2 cache,1.8ghz,800mhz fsb,dualcore)

 intel945gc chipset

 1GB PC2-4200 DDR2

compaq home professional keyboard , PS/2 scroll mouse

 160GB sata hard drive

 intel sraphics media accelerator 950,DVMT 3.0 - upto 128mb

OS free dos preinstalled but,
currently running with MS WINDOWS XP professional SP3.
