so when trying this i get
$ sudo apt-get purge linux-headers-2.6.31-14

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure
-a' to correct the problem.

***
but this worked :-)
$ sudo dpkg -r linux-headers-2.6.31-14
(Reading database ... 671073 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing linux-headers-2.6.31-14 ...
laptop:~$

***
and now synaptic is back to normal and i guess things are back on
track am quite quite happy

Thanks a Lot Onkar, very grateful
