It works on 9.10 as well not sure about 10.04

Connect the device, wait 30 seconds and  the run the following in a terminal

-$ dmesg

post output here. It would help figure how the device is connected

Access terminal by - Applications - Accessories - Terminal

In the terminal type
dmesg
press enter

post the last few lines which would indicate how the device is treated.

To copy in terminal select using your mouse and cop using control+shift+c
