Some questions

How did you upgrade ? over the net  i assume, did the upgrade complete
properly, where there any messages of pending updates / upgrade.

Am thinking that when transiting from 9.04 to 9.10 the grub has
changed from grub (the boot loader) to grub 2 , so one issue might be
that you might need to manually upgrade grub.

don't panic at the volume read slowly and not worry about asking anything.

if this does not work get hold of 9.10 cd or even a later version - in
fact later the better you can then do a fresh install. With this
warning * make sure you back up your data using a live cd * and am
hoping that you have a separate home partition.
