[ubuntu-in] Problem in Ubuntu 10.10 Help needed

Dear All,

When I boot my laptop before the Ubuntu login screen I get the following errors:

Could not update ICEauthority file /var/lib/gdm/.ICEauthority
on closing this i get the error:
There is a problem with the configuration server. (/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)
On closing this i get a screen saying 'rashida-laptop' and when you click this it says 'ubuntu 10.10. There is also a panel below stating on the right time and shut down button with options shutdown and restart.
None of this works.
Is there something which you can help me with.
