Gcc compiler dus not work

dear all,

I try to use the GCC C compiler 4.2.4 on my ubuntu 8.04 but it only give error -  impliciete declaratie from functie `'

i just follow the handbook ubuntu unleashed and the GCC man page

A simple program like;

main()
{
       printf (" Hello World \n");
}

gives The above error

I work in my one directorie
Do i have to specify the path also ? ( the handbook or manpage says nothing about that)
