Se metti "auto" in /etc/fstab , il mount cerca di "indovinare" il
filesystem con un probing, e generalmente verifica su questa lista di
filesystem:
adfs, bfs, cramfs, ext, ext2, ext3, hfs, hpfs, iso9660, jfs, minix,
ntfs, qnx4, reiserfs, romfs, udf, ufs, vxfs, xfs, xiafs

Se il probing fallisce, allora mount cercherà di leggere il file
/etc/filesystems laddove potrebbero essere elencati anche altri fs (ad
esempio potresti provare a rimettere auto in fstab e aggiungere, primo
della lista, vfat in /etc/filesystems).

In ogni caso vale questa frase riportata nel man di mount:

Warning: the probing uses a heuristic (the presence of appropriate
`magic'), and could recognize the wrong filesystem type, possibly with
catastrophic consequences. If your data is valuable, don't ask mount
to guess.

Quindi non mi fido troppo di 'auto'....
