Let me clarify my late night ramblings:
I have used f-spot in the past and it kept the images in place without
moving them. I used f-spot the other day and it copied them to a
directory with subdirectories of dates. I looked again today and noticed
that there is a check for 'copy to photos directory'. I unchecked it and
it worked the old way. Perhaps this check should off by default?

On the f-spot vain that I wrote early, perhaps a nautilus plugin could
allow right click load functionality on image directories. Then a user
could right click a driectory 'show in f-spot' and later when f-spot is
run those images just seem to appear. It appears trivial to pass the
right-clicked directory to f-spot load module.
