On second though, this doesn't appear to be an xorg issue, I'm starting
to suspect dbus now.

Here's why:

Starting my apps in a failsafe X session works. Just running GNOME works
too, until I turn on xchat-gnome. Now it would be kinda odd that xchat
could make the entire X session jump, so I rather suspect something like
dbus or hal to be the cause.

Looking into this further.
