Hi there
Could you please specify the version of the software involved you have installed. for instance the version of gimp, f-spot, eog, compiz if the desktop effects are activated, libmono, etc.
Also it'll be of great help if you could launch f-spot from a xterm or gnome-terminal and attach the log of the application when this happens.

if you instead of left-click over "GIMP Image Editor", do a right-click,
can the same behaviour be observed?.

maybe this could be related to bug #121796
