When this bug is fixed in Debian, then it would be possible to apply for
a "SRU" (Stable Release Update). The procedure for that can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

I'm not promising that the SRU team would accept it, but that's the
procedure to ask for the bug fix (once the fixed package exists) to be
applied to Intrepid
