I am having this same issue. Only I thought it was due to switching
while having some apps open during the switch (pidgin and firefox)
because during switch with apps open I got some odd errors. I know, newb
move to just have some "odd errors" without anything specific. I figured
switching back would fix the problem, but lo and behold at next boot I
didn't get any panels. Now I remember removing tomboy as well.
