The minimize to tray feature has been removed as it conflicted with window managers that iconfy windows when switching workspace, as metacity does, see:

Bug description:
Binary package hint: smuxi

What is expected: When minimized, smuxi remains in the task-bar. There is an option to choose when it is shown in the notification area, and an option to choose whether it is removed from the task-bar on minimize or not.

What happens: When minimized, smuxi disappears from the task-bar and goes into the notification area. There appears to be no option to change this behavior; only an option to change whether the icon displays in the notification area when minimized. Enabling notification on minimize (unexpectedly) removes the application from the task-bar also when minimized.
