Is there a reason why this isn't installed by default when you tick the "Install non-free software" checkbox in the installer?
It seems like a major omission from the list, if MP3 is supported for everything else.
If this isn't the place to ask this sort of question, where should ask
instead?

Status in “banshee” package in Ubuntu:

Binary package hint: banshee
Under 10.10 I am able to go into Banshee preferences and set the
Import CD format as MP3. However, this option is not available within
Natty.
Since I need to import my (and my wife's) cd's into a format which is
readable on the various computers and devices we use, MP3 is a
requirement. It would be the same for a lot of new converts...
There is probably a package to be installed, but if MP3's can play "out of the box", then why can't they be imported as well?
At the very least a pop-up message advising what needs to be installed would be helpful.
