I think the behaviour for this has changed in Ubuntu 10.10, so that
volume up pushes the volume up from 0 instead. On the other hand, it
sounds like your mute button isn't registering a keypress when the
volume is muted, hence not allowing you to unmute it.
Could you run xev in a terminal, and in the window that appears, press
Mute twice in succession, then post the output here.
Either way, the volume that is being changed is the global machine
volume, rather than Banshee's volume (Banshee has nothing to do with the
volume keys), so I'm changing the package to gnome-settings-daemon
temporarily (I believe that's what handles the volume keys)
** Changed in: banshee (Ubuntu)
Status: New => Incomplete
** Package changed: banshee (Ubuntu) => gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu)

Title:
Thinkpad T61 keyboard volume control buttons badly programmed
Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Thinkpad T61 keyboard volume control buttons badly programmed.
I am playing a piece of music using Banshee. If I press the hardware keyboard volume control button "Mute", then the volume will be zero. This is as expected.
If I now press the hardware keyboard volume control button "Mute" again, then the volume will stay zero. This is an error. I expect that the old volume would be restored.
But I can press now the hardware keyboard volume control button "Up", and the music will play with the old volume value.
This is an error because this button's function is only to increase the volume from the present volume level.
