Just to add a new data point here. I was also having this problem, and I
had the following JDKs installed:

ii  sun-java5-jdk                              1.5.0-11-1ubuntu2                      Sun Java(TM) Development Kit (JDK) 5.0
ii  sun-java6-jdk                              6-00-2ubuntu2                          Sun Java(TM) Development Kit (JDK) 6

Originally, I was using Java6 as my default, but, based on some people
seeing the problem and some not, then I did:

sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-1.5.0-sun


And eclipse no longer crashes, for me at least. Could anyone else who is having this problem also try this? That way at least we can work out where the problem is. But it appears to me that it is an interaction between Java 6 and Firefox that causes the issue.
