ok i reinstalled and tried the regular way and attached is a screenshot of how far it got before it crashed 
and it is always reproducable 

using the commands you told me  here is what happened

shawn at gusty64:~$ export G_SLICE=always-malloc
shawn at gusty64:~$ firefox

Segmentation fault (core dumped)
