in the last few days, it has happened regularly that when I left my pc for a while, X had restarted when I returned. The only application running was Firefox.
This is what I found in /var/log/ Xorg.0.log.old :

(II) Configured Mouse: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic, removing from l$
SetClientVersion: 0 9
SetGrabKeysState - disabled
(II) Open ACPI successful (/var/run/acpid.socket)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0x00000000, 0x00003b00)
(II) NVIDIA(0): Initialized GART.

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x81) [0x80c9581]
1: [0xffffe420]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting
