I think I am having this same problem.  I am using the latest hardy.
the 'safe mode' does not help. I am using kubuntu also.  I takes about
10 min to open firefox, and then it is very unstable. if i click on any
thing in it takes another 10 minutes to complete that action.  I have
atached my output  "strace -f -eopen firefox-3.0 &> /tmp/strace.1.log"
