I will try disabling extensions.

What I can tell you about my setup that is of interest:

KDE 3.5.9-0ubuntu6
xserver-xorg-video-intel-2:2.2.1-1ubuntu12
Compiz 1:0.7.4-0ubuntu4

If there is a question of combination of things causing the problem,
that may be it.

I will try disabling extensions (I expect no change), and disabling
desktop effects (could be, but there are really no other problems). I
suppose I could try using xserver-xorg-video-i810, but there are reasons
that I need intel instead (dual monitors being chief among them).
