Sorry, I was a bit sloppy in my previous comment.

To be precise, the installation of Java 6 fails; Java 5 works.

Contrary to the initial report, multiverse is enabled for me.

BTW: I can't install the Java 6 plugin with add/remove applications
either (it is not in the list).
