This sounds like a problem that I was having.  It isn't FireFox.  It
wasn't there in 7.04, but was in 7.10.  I am on 8.04 (beta) now.

Go to Terminal & enter this to edit the sysctl.conf file --

gksudo gedit /etc/sysctl.conf

add the following two lines

net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 4096 16384 131072
net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 4096 87380 174760

restart your machine & try again.

I know this is geeky, and perhaps a permanent solution will be coming
from the Ubuntu folks.

If this doesn't solve your problem, re-edit the above & remove the 2
lines.  Just to be safe.
