Just a quick follow-up:

I reinstalled FF2 on Hardy - everything else stayed the same.

Here the fix I mentioned above (css file in "~/.mozilla/firefox/MY_PROFILE_FOLDER/chrome/userContent.css") works.
So the bug only appears in the FF3 beta.
